Feast of Saint Ignatius of Antioch

On October 17, the Church honors Saint Ignatius of Antioch, one of the earliest and most courageous bishops of the Christian faith. Born around the year 35, Ignatius was the third bishop of Antioch, following Saint Peter and Saint Evodius. He led his community during a time of persecution and is remembered for his deep love of Christ and the Church.

Ignatius is best known for his letters, written while he was being taken to Rome to face martyrdom around the year 107. These letters to various Christian communities remain among the most valuable writings from the early Church. They express his clear understanding of the faith, his devotion to the Eucharist, and his strong defense of unity under the authority of the bishop.

He is the patron saint of the Church in the Eastern Mediterranean and of those who serve in church leadership. His writings often use the phrase "the Catholic Church," making him the first known person to describe the Church with that name. For Ignatius, the Church was not an idea but a living body united in Christ through the Eucharist.

Ignatius accepted suffering as the path that would bring him closer to Christ. He wrote, "I am God's wheat, and I am to be ground by the teeth of wild beasts that I may be found pure bread of Christ." His courage in facing death inspired generations of Christians to hold firm in faith during persecution.

From his life, we learn three clear lessons.

• Stay united in the Church. Faith is strongest when believers stand together under their shepherds.
• Cherish the Eucharist. It is the true presence of Christ that gives life to the community.
• Remain faithful even in hardship. True discipleship often requires endurance and trust in God's will.

Saint Ignatius of Antioch reminds us that faith is not theory but witness. His words and example continue to strengthen the Church he served with such love. As we honor him, let us renew our commitment to unity, fidelity, and courage in following Christ.

Through his intercession, may our parish grow in faith and charity, and may our lives reflect the same burning devotion that guided Saint Ignatius of Antioch to the fullness of eternal life.
